Drupalcon in San Francisco was awesome but definitely bewildering. Picture three thousand geeks with at least two wireless devices each.

I don't know if it's a side effect of getting old, but I kinda hate crowds, so my strategy was to focus on attending the BOFs because they are small, interactive, and not recorded (basically the opposite of the scheduled sessions).

The highlights

  • Making great progress on the Association subsite with Andrew Berry, Carl Wiedemann, Damien Tournoud and the Linnovate guys (and releasing it not long after!)
  • The offsite geeking out at the ChX Coders Lounge and the Commerce Guys coworking space, Parisoma
  • Recording a Drupal...

The IA Summit, an annual gathering of Information Architecture specialists, ended on a high note with Whitney Hess's closing plenary. Taking Whitney's advice before she gave it, the past 12 months I've gotten involved with several different communities, namely the awesome Drupal community. It was my first IA Summit so I guess that makes me a Newbie. There were things I would have done differently, both at this conference and others in the past:

Newbie Mistake #1: Not putting yourself out there

I've been to only a handful of local UX/web events, so I didn't know many people at the IA Summit. If you're horrifically shy like myself, putting yourself out there is a tough one, but you have to speak up at topic tables or in the hallways, otherwise, how will anyone know how...

Last night was another great meetup held in a classroom in the Tang Center at MIT.

My notes are Cool Drupal Things to Investigate:

In 2008 I was really fortunate to fit in a lot of travel: the week in the Gambia (West Africa), a week in Melbourne (Australia), ten days in the US (Minneapolis, Chicago, Colorado, Utah and California), and five days in Germany (Hamburg and Berlin). These were entirely vacation trips.

2009 was a lot different in that none of my travel was vacation (unless you count a weekend at a friend's house in Vermont). Not that I'm complaining, exactly. I moved from Old England to New England, traveled to Paris for Drupalcon, roadtripped to Montreal for Drupalcomp, and had five days in New Orleans for Do It With Drupal. But during 2009, but I experienced a financial crisis known as Not Enough Freelance Work (part and parcel of starting over in a new country, I'll bet!)

Low fat and versatile, these biscotti are worth the effort...the perfect go-go-go breakfast food. Biscotti is very hard, so plan to dunk them into coffee or tea. Alternatively, for a traditional Italian experience, reduce sugar to 1/2 cup and dunk the biscotti in Vin Santo or other glorious dessert wine.

Ingredients

  • 3 large eggs
  • 3 c sugar
  • 1 t vanilla extract
  • 3⁄4 t rum or other flavoring, like almond extract
  • 2 c all purpose flour
  • 1 c whole wheat flour
  • 1⁄2 c almonds or hazelnuts (raw or toasted)
  • 1 t ground cinnamon
  • 3⁄4 t baking soda
  • 1⁄4 t salt

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a large baking sheet or use baking paper. Combine first 4 ingredients in bowl...

What's the Soup (whatsthesoup.net) is live! It's an online directory of restaurant listings to help people find soup varieties in their local area, as well as a food blog. You might feel hungry after spending time on the site!

What's the Soup logo

The site is updated by many people. In addition to the site owners, Ed and Heather, several restaurant owners and bloggers also have their own user accounts.

The site was originally built in WordPress, but I rebuilt it in Drupal 6, in order to be more flexible and powerful as the site grows. For the overall look and feel, I used Acquia...

Overview

I'm rebuilding a site in Drupal, with the very awesome assistance of himerus aka Jake Strawn. There's a very complicated View to build and we could really use some input on how to make this happen, and whether it's possible using just Views & Contrib code (for the most part). We will be at the October 6th Drupal Boston meet up as well.

I've also cross-posted this to the Boston Drupal group as well, so there may be other comments there: http://groups.drupal.org/node/28172

So, there are two content types, Restaurant and Soup (a restaurant can have more than one soup).

Client requirement:

  1. The site...

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending DrupalCon Paris, held at a beautiful venue south of Paris city center. My attendance was made possible thanks to receiving one of the scholarships from the Drupal Association.

If you saw me there, I was one of those people running around in a red volunteer T-shirt. As a volunteer, duties varied but usually included the registration desk, and answering questions like 'Where is the Isobar room' or (in French) 'What is this conference?' Other duties included assembling bags and badges, tidying/restocking refreshment tables in the public areas, moving chairs and tables, as well as monitoring the session rooms...

If you want to know more about the open-source CMS Drupal or would like to improve your Drupal skills, I've compiled some training resources below.
Learning Drupal

There are many (free and not-free) training videos (DVD or CD), from Lullabot, YouTube, lynda.com, learnbythedrop.com, drupaltherapy.com, powerfulcms.com, the Do it With Drupal video archive, recorded camp and Drupalcon sessions, screencasts attached to modules, and more. Search for "Drupal training video" or "Drupal video tutorial" on the Web along with any other keywords to find additional videos. Further down, I also provide a link to Training Services that also include videos...

Sarah Beeny from Channel 4s Property Snakes and Ladders

I'm a fan of the UK tv show Property Ladder, recently renamed to Property Snakes and Ladders*, thanks to the volatility of the housing market. In the show, host Sarah Beeny helps steer first-time property developers towards the right decisions for their property developing project. For 99% of the show's participants, making money is a priority. They'll want to design, implement and sell as quickly as possible for maximum return. Unfortunately, personal taste and emotions can cloud judgment.

As I watch each of the shows, it's occurred to me that many...
